Virginia (Ginny) Anderson Memorial Scholarship
Virginia (Ginny) Anderson passed away on August 6th (obituary) . For the past 15 years Ginny was the heart and sole of the Information Assurance Center. Her smile, genuineness, passion, enthusiasm, and love for people radiated through our office and department and those characteristics were visible in the relationships she built with others. She always wanted to help people.
Ginny loved engaging with and mentoring the students. Many of them felt as if she was their second mom. She was always available to answer student’s questions, listen to their problems as well as celebrate their successes. In addition, she helped countless students stay on track with their program and navigate through the ISU system. I have had many students comment that would not have graduated with Ginny’s help. There were many times students would come to the Information Assurance Center not to talk to a faculty member, but to talk with Ginny.
Ginny was the organization and the glue that allowed Iowa State to host over 50 cyber defense competitions during her tenure. Even though the competitions required spending over 50 Saturdays on campus, she never missed one and never complained. I will miss her help making pancakes and walking tacos for the students. Ginny was always dedicated to the students, the center, the department and Iowa State University.
Personal Note: Ginny was more than my program assistant, she was my close friend and confidant. She always had a way of opening my eyes to different perspectives which helped me become a better person. Ginny taught me how to accept help. Ginny kept me organized often taking care of things before I knew they needed to be done. I enjoyed watching Ginny grow into the job over the past 15 years as she took on more responsibilities.
I also think back fondly on her dedication to her family. Ginny was always taking about her children and grandchildren. She loved going to their events and often shared her love for the Iowa State Cyclones with them.
Many may not know that Ginny took up running later in life. I really enjoyed watching her train for her first half marathon. I had the pleasure to run several half marathons with her, and even though we did not stay together on the course I always enjoyed watching her finish. The office is quite lonely and most certainly not the same without her. I miss starting every morning talking with Ginny about life and work. We all miss her smile, warmth and presence. I know Ginny is watching over her family and all of the students she met along the way. She will always be missed moreover never forgotten for she will always remain in the hearts and minds of those who were privileged to know her. – Doug
Our goal is to raise $100,000 to establish an endowed scholarship to honor Ginny and her impact on so many lives. The scholarship will target women studying cyber security at Iowa State. Ginny loved Iowa State and loved interacting with the students.
Ginny never wanted to be recognized for her activities, even though many events would not have happened without her dedication and organizational skills. This scholarship is our way of both honoring and recognizing Ginny for everything she has done to make Iowa State a better place.
